Achievment

Frank recently joined his local Toastmasters group to be around people who have a passion for speaking and learning how to become better speakers.

passé. Achievement is the new
standard. You don’t just set a
goal, make a resolution, stick it

Bible, and hope it comes true. You
have to actually do something. The
requirement is that you plan your
year before the year begins, plan
the month before the month
begins, and plan each day before
the day begins. With these quick
and easy steps, you will become
an achievement machine. Set only
those goals you really want to
achieve; otherwise sabotage your
ill-thought out plans and finish
2013 in the same pot of soup as
2012.

Why do Speakers Cost so much!

I thought you might enjoy a simple answer to this FAQ.

Let's say you spend $3,000 on a speaker. Here's how that typically breaks down. About $800 off the top goes to the government in taxes. Speakers usually pay more because they have to pay both the employee and the employer's portion of the social security tax (all self employed people have to do this). About another $100 per gig is going to health insurance (more if the speaker has children or a spouse they pay health insurance for, like I do).

If affiliated with an agency, they are usually paying a MINIMUM of 20-percent of the total to the agency, so that's about $600. Figure that the average successful speaker pays about 10-percent of all the money they bring in on marketing costs, so that's another $300. It costs a lot to get the word out with mailers, websites, conference attendance, and so forth. All of that comes out of the speaker's pocket.

So, now, we're at about $1,800 spent. Then comes the cost of travel. Airfare usually averages about $400 per appearance (sometimes a little less or a little more, depending on where you live -- in Denver I'm averaging just under $400 per). Hotel is about $100 a night on the cheap end, and a rental car is almost always about $100 a day if you add in the cost of a half tank of gas. Our total cost is up to $2,400. Let's bump it up to $2,450 assuming that our speaker would like to buy a sandwich, pay a toll, tip a shuttle driver, park his/her car at the airport, and maybe buy a soft drink in the airport.

That leaves about $550. A speaker doing 40 appearances a year is doing really well, so that's about $22,000 for the year after expenses. Not what you thought a speaker makes, huh? Truth is – unless you can charge upwards of $4,000 an appearance and do at least 40-50 a year, speaking is really a great SECOND job.

Just thought you'd like to know. Obviously those speakers who can charge top dollar and book 80-100 programs a year are doing very well, but for most speakers you've seen, this just isn't the case.

There are many reasons to eat fruits and vegetables. A recent study from Finland suggests that flavonoids, found in fruits and vegetables, can reduce risk of chronic disease. Flavonoids often work as antioxidants and can protect against oxidative damage that may lead to heart disease, cancer, and diabetes. Flavonoid intakes of more than 10,000 people were measured and their rates of various diseases close to 30 years later were assessed. The death rate from heart disease was lower in those with higher flavonoid intakes. Of all the dietary sources of flavonoids, apples appeared to be most associated with reduced risk of death from heart disease. Stroke rates were also lower with higher intakes of flavonoids. Prostate cancer and breast cancer risk appeared to be lower with higher intakes of certain flavonoids. Flavonoids, and their apparent effects on a number of chronic diseases, provide another reason to eat generous amounts of fruits and vegetables.

Dream Big, Dream Often

Dream Big, Dream Often

Have you ever noticed that children have the greatest imagination in the world?  What is just an ordinary box to us, is a car, a fort, a jet ski, a swimming pool and more to a child. There imagination can go on and on.

Children are great because they posses a great sense of wonder and amazement.  They always know exactly how to DREAM:  They Dream Big and They Dream Often. When children dream of ice cream, they dream of the whole world made of ice cream not just an ice cream cone.  When it comes to dreaming about themselves they always DREAM of success.  More often than not, you’ll find a child dreams of winning the Super Bowl,  being first-place in a race or being the best at whatever they are interested in at the moment.   When things go wrong, they call "Do Over" and work at it until they make it right.  They live their dream out everyday through their imaginations.
  
Childhood is great for that reason.  As adults we lose some of the childhood wonder because we are conditioned over time or jaded by negative experiences which damage our ability to dream.  This conditioning pushes us to the unhealthy acceptance that our Dreams can’t come true.  We begin to live our lives in the daily rut.  Farmers use the plow to create ruts in the ground.  Within these ruts they plant the seeds for the development of a crop.  Therefore, the farmer creates ruts in the ground in order to make the dream come true.  Like children we need to Dream Big and Dream Often. We need to look for opportunities to make our dreams come true. Like Farmers, we need to use the rut to plant the seeds for the next success. 

Are you living your Dream? or have you let the Dream escape?  When we lose sight of our Dream our lives become stagnant, uneventful and dull.  However, when we keep our dreams in sight hope abounds and possibilities are endless. As we end our summer of fun and sun and head into the cold and gray skies of autumn and winter, the question one must answer is:  Are you in a rut or creating one?
